Canadian Historical Association Awards

The Canadian Historical Association Annual Meeting wrapped up in Toronto last week. Concordia historians were front and centre at the prize ceremony on Tuesday evening, bringing home no fewer than five national awards! Two faculty members, Nora Jaffary and Ron Rudin, one recent PhD graduate, Lachlan MacKinnon, and one current doctoral candidate, Eric Fillion, all deserve our heartfelt congratulations for this amazing success. They are setting standards of historical scholarship which are second to none and of which we can all be very proud!

Here is the list of CHA prizes won by our colleagues and students this year:

Nora JaffaryReproduction and Its Discontents in Mexico: Childbirth and Contraception from 1750 to 1905.  Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2016. Wallace K. Ferguson Prize for the outstanding scholarly book in a field of history other than Canadian history. Ronald RudinKouchibouguac: Removal, Resistance, and Remembrance at a Canadian National Park.  Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2016. Ron's book won two awards, the Clio Atlantic Prize for the outstanding scholarly book in the history of Atlantic Canada AND the Canadian Oral History Association (COHA) Prize for an outstanding example of oral history practice. It was also short-listed for the Sir John A. Macdonald Prize, awarded to the work of Canadian history judged to have made the most significant contribution to an understanding of the Canadian past.

Lachlan MacKinnon, “Deindustrialization on the Periphery: An Oral History of Sydney Steel, 1945-2001,” PhD, Concordia University, 2016. Eugene A. Forsey Prize for the best thesis on Labour History, awarded by the Canadian Committee on Labour History.

Eric Fillion, “Jazz libre: “musique-action” ou la recherche d’une praxis révolutionnaire au Québec (1967-1975),” Labour/Le travail 77 (printemps 2016): 93-120. Best Article in Political History Prize (French Language), awarded by the Political History Group.
