Véronique Legault, member of the Kanien'kehá:ka community of Kahnawake and an M.A. student in Applied Linguistics, has been invited to attend the global launch of UNESCO’s International Year of Indigenous Languages. This year was declared to help promote and protect indigenous languages and improve the lives of those who speak them.  It will contribute to achieving the objectives set out in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The celebration is also expected to strengthen and reinforce the many standard-setting tools adopted by the international community which include specific provisions to promote and protect languages as well as create an opportunity for Indigenous peoples of the world to come together and share on their experiences with the protection of their languages.

Véronique will be representing the First Nations Youth Network: The main objective of the Network is to support the creation of Youth Committees in First Nations communities and urban centers in order to give youth a common voice and to develop projects for the well-being of the communities.

Congratulations, Véronique!
