Department Statement following the Incidents of 1 March 2017

March 6, 2017
|
By Sandra Gabriele

The faculty of the Department of Communication Studies stand in solidarity with our Muslim students and colleagues. Yesterday’s vicious threats of violence impact on the rights of all to practice their faith without fear of reprisal. Universities are spaces of diversity, inclusion and openness. These types of actions that seek to terrify and silence others is anathema to an ethos of equity, respect and mutual engagement.

We recognize that systemic inequality results in hierarchies of difference which produce privileges for some, but not others. Challenging all forms of hate and engaging in respectful dialogue is a necessary point of departure for any critical inquiry that is the hallmark of a University. We remain steadfast in our commitment to bring these perspectives into the classroom everyday.
