Yoga and Health Benefits to Aging
With ageing there is a general deterioration in physical and mental faculties, related to hormonal changes. The practice of Yoga can reduce the decline so that a healthier lifestyle can be extended. In the case of illness, it has been medically shown that the practice of yoga can shorten and improve substantially the recovery period. There is a direct link between the eight steps of Yoga which includes asanas (postures) pranayama (control of the breath) and meditation on physical and emotional health. This talk will give an overview of the 8 steps and show the link between yoga and physical as well as mental health. Documented research in this area will be referenced. It is suggested that in any Institute for Healthy Ageing, Yoga should be an important part.

Dr. Pillay is a Professor and in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Concordia University. He is also NSERC/Hydro-Québec Senior Industrial Research Chair. Dr. Pillay has taught the Bali Method of yoga at Yoga Bliss from 2012 to 2017, one of the oldest yoga schools in Montréal that was established 45 years ago. He studied levels 1&2 with Dr Bali (200 hours each) as well as yoga with Marshall Govindan of St Entienne de Bolton and with Satguru Jaggi Vasudev of Coimbatore, India. He now teaches at NDG yoga. He also attends and practices Vipassana meditation, located in Montebello, QC.
