What Is Democracy? Documentary screening with Silvia Federici and director Astra Taylor
Join Cinema Politica Concordia for a special screening of What Is Democracy?, with scholar and activist Silvia Federici and director Astra Taylor in attendance for a post-screening Q&A. Coming at a moment of profound political and social crisis, the searing documentary reflects on a word we too often take for granted.
Director Astra Taylor’s idiosyncratic, philosophical journey spans millennia and continents. The documentary features a diverse cast, including celebrated theorists, trauma surgeons, activists, factory workers, asylum seekers and former prime ministers. This urgent film connects the past and the present, the emotional and the intellectual, the personal and the political, to provoke and inspire. If we want to live in democracy, we must first ask what the word even means.
Silvia Federici, one of the most important contemporary feminist theorists and activists, will be launching two of her latest books at this special event: Re-enchanting the World: Feminism and the Politics of the Commons and Witches, Witch-Hunting, and Women.
The event will be presented in collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada and will be co-presented with L'Euguélionne, librairie féministe, Feminist Media Studio and the Centre for the Study of Democratic. Admission is by donation — $5 to $15 suggested. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Childcare provided on site by the Montreal Childcare Collective with 24 hours’ notice.
