Deep Listening Workshop
With Anne Bourne and Yuliya Kondratenko
In this participatory workshop, instructor Anne Bourne will lead participants through a series of collective sound exercises that focus on vocalization and listening in equal measure. Following Pauline Oliveros’s practice of “deep listening” and event-based sound scores, Bourne will lead participants through a series of verbal and non-verbal explorations that interrogate intersubjective communication, sounded space, and embodied perception. With the seed techniques of the Oliveros text scores, each person finds agency in the collective creation of an improvised soundscape, with and without words.
The event is open to all, however we wish to prioritize the participation of persons from marginalized groups, including BIPOC (Black and Indigenous People of Colour); Trans, non-binary, queer, and femme individuals; and persons of different abilities. Please note that the workshop in some places encourages touch as a form of creative and social connection; however, participants are invited to participate in these aspects of the exercises only as they feel comfortable. Please contact us in advance for special requirements for difference of physical or other ability.
Deep Listening comes from the pedagogy of the late Pauline Oliveros, "a non verbal creative expression of experience, to be received with embodied understanding, that may bring a sense of well-being”
