Dr. Bercuson brings to the WSSR a lifelong commitment to the study of the military and the effect of wars on Canada and its citizens. His work focuses the evolution of the Canadian military from the late 19th century to the war in Afghanistan. Bercuson will take participants through a detailed historical account of actions taken by Canadian military forces while also addressing broader questions faced by the Canadian government and the Canadian public. Military strategies and the defence of democratic ideals involve far more than the actions taken on the ground during conflict.

Bercuson will explore the many layers of such strategies. In what way should this country become involved in international conflicts? What short and long term effects will these interventions have on the international community and the people here at home? What will this mean for future generations of Canadians? And how do we deal with caring for our veterans after they return?
