Concordia has appointed Jonathan Levinson as executive director, institutional planning and analysis, and named William Cheaib as interim chief of staff to the president. Both appointments are effective December 3, 2012.

“I am pleased that Jonathan Levinson has accepted to head our Institutional Planning Office, which is essential to the development of the university’s strategic priorities,” says Concordia President Alan Shepard. “He has deep knowledge of Concordia and he was an important contributor to the university’s first strategic framework.”

Levinson’s new role will draw on his skill and experience in strategic planning, enterprise risk management and resource planning. He will also advise members of senior administration and other internal and external stakeholders about the planning implications of key institutional data on Concordia that his office gathers, maintains and analyzes.

As chief of staff, Cheaib will lead the strategic management and planning of all operations in the Office of the President and recommend implementation plans for projects and priorities. He will also provide advice on key university constituencies, policies, initiatives and events.

“William Cheaib has more than a decade of experience in forging international academic alliances and leading institutional and governmental strategies on education,” adds Shepard. “He is passionate about global education issues and I look forward to working with him in his new role as my chief of staff.”

Levinson has been chief of staff since February 2007 and is a part-time professor at Concordia’s John Molson School of Business, where he teaches business law and ethics. He was previously assistant general counsel.

Levinson holds a bachelor of arts in philosophy from Queen’s University and a bachelor of common law (LLB) and civil law (BCL) from McGill University. He is a lawyer and a member of the Risk and Insurance Management Society as well as the Ordre des administrateurs agréés du Québec.

William Cheaib joined Concordia in 2006 as director of Concordia International and has been interim associate vice-president, international, since December 2011. He will continue in that position until the end of December 2012.

Cheaib has extensive experience in university administration. He is a board member of the Canadian Bureau for International Education, where he chaired the strategic planning committee and was chair of its recent Canada-Francophonie Education Forum. The Association of International Educators has recognized him for his contribution in advancing the internationalization of higher education.

Cheaib holds a master’s degree in law from Université de Montréal, and has experience in intellectual property law in Europe and North America.
