Pope Francis says Turkish slaughter of Armenian’s was genocide

On Sunday, April 12 Pope Francis called the 1915 mass killing of Armenians by Turks the “first genocide of the 20th century.” His words have inflamed an already historically tense relationship between the Vatican and Islam. Kyle Matthews, senior deputy director of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS), can weigh in on the impact that the Pope’s words might have.
