Monsieur le Chancelier, j'ai maintenant le privilège de vous présenter le très honorable Brian Mulroney. Leader du monde politique, du monde des affaires et de la société civile, ce grand Canadien est un ambassadeur d'envergure internationale pour le Canada.
It is particularly fitting that Canada's 18th Prime Minister should be receiving this recognition from Concordia University, as he served on our Board of Governors from 1978 to 1983.
Mr. Mulroney's roots in an Irish Quebecer working class family have well suited him to a lifetime of negotiation, arbitration, problem-solving and reconciliation-extremely valuable skills in any society, but particularly in this highly diverse Canada of ours.
The gifts of oratory and laughter are traditionally associated with Irish culture, and Brian Mulroney has been blessed with both. But he has another trait, particular to him, and that is courage: the courage to question fundamental structural arrangements, practices and received wisdom; the courage to undertake enormous processes of reform whose effects will continue' to be felt for generations to come; the courage to persist under difficult conditions, and to follow through.

En 1988, le Canada a exporté pour loo milliards de dollars de biens et services vers les États-Unis. Aujourd'hui, ce chiffre s'élève à 350 milliards grâce à l'Accord de libre-échange que M. Mulroney avait négocié malgré la vive résistance qu'il avait rencontrée à l'époque. À lui seul, le Québec exporte pour 50 milliards de dollars par année aux États-Unis, volume d'activité qui aurait semblé extrêmement ambitieux en 1988
Despite building this close and well-cemented commercial relationship with the United States, Brian Mulroney also had the courage to define a highly independent position where he felt it was important to Canadian integrity and identity. His government differed sharply from the US positions on Cuba, on Central America, and on tying aid dollars to performance in the area of human rights.
Nelson Mandela has often publicly and privately recognized Canada's contribution in the fall of apartheid and the shaping of his country's democratic reforms. Brian Mulroney played a lead role in this peaceful transformation.
