Honorary degree citation - James Alexander Corry*

Mr. Chancellor:

I have the honour to present to you James Alexander Corry, a Canadian, internationally recognized as a scholar and teacher. To honour Dr. Corry is to honour a man who in 1924, at the age of 25, received the Rhodes Scholarship for Saskatchewan, became a member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1944, a man who in 1964 was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.

To honour Dr. Corry is to honour a man with a distinguished career as a university teacher and administrator: called to the Bar of Saskatchewan in 1930, Dr. Carry was Professor of Law at the University of Saskatchewan from 1927 to 1936; then Hardy Professor of Political Science at Queen's University from 1936 to 1961. Dr. Carry was the Vice-Principal of Queen's from 1951 to 1961, and the Principal of this great Canadian institution from 1961 to 1968.

Dr. Carry has served his country as a member of the Board of Governors of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, as a member of the Canada Council, as President of the Canadian Political Science Association, as President of the National Confederation of Canadian Universities and Colleges, as Chairman of the Canadian University Foundation, and as Chairman of the Committee of Presidents of Ontario Universities.

Finally, to honour Dr. Carry is to honour a scholar of international reputation. the author of Democratic Government and Politics, Elements of Democratic Government, Law and Policy, The Changing Conditions of Politics, and The Power of the Law. Born in 1899, Dr. Carry was commissioned by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, in 1971, together with Louis Philippe Bonneau of Universite Laval, to examine certain aspects of university research, and to propose means far the rationalization of university research in Canada. Two years of analysis of frontier research and reflective inquiry have produced the now universally-discussed Quest for the Optimum.

Mr. Chancellor, an behalf of University Council, and by the authority of the Board of Governors, I present to you Dr. James Alexander Corry, that you may confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
