External Sources of Funding
Canadian students are encouraged to apply for SSHRC fellowships (Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council). Quebec students should also apply for FRQSC fellowships (Fonds de Recherche du Québec - Société et Culture). Special entrance awards may also be granted to recipients of an external award. Please refer to the School of Graduate Studies' provincial & federal awards page for more information.
International and Canadian PhD applicants are encouraged to apply for Foundation scholarships, such as the Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships and Vanier Scholarships. Competitive doctoral merit scholarships are also available from PBEEE for foreign nationals. Additional information on awards offered to international students may be obtained from the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE).

Concordia Awards and Scholarships
Entrance Awards
PhD applicants are automatically considered for all Concordia entrance scholarships through the individual faculty’s graduate admissions office. No separate application is required. Consult the School of Graduate Studies' Entrance Awards page for more information about Entrance Awards. The department generally does not offer funding to newly admitted MA or GrDip applicants. However, funding may be offered on an exceptional basis to in-course MA students.
In-House Awards
Departmental Donor Awards include the Balvir and Ranjna Singh Memorial Scholarships in Economics and the Professor Jaleel Ahmad Scholarship. A description of these awards, as well as a full listing of in-house awards, is available on the School of Graduate Studies' Award Directory page.
The Department offers Teaching Assistantships (TAs) to all full-time PhD students, based on a yearly assessment of a student’s funding package.
Qualified graduate students may also be hired to serve as tutorial/lab leaders for selected core courses (e.g., introductory micro and macro, intermediate micro and macro, advanced micro, macro and econometrics). Tutorials and labs are assigned during the regular TA assessment process, and the tutorial/lab leaders stipend in the same as for other TA duties.
Funding opportunities in the form of Research Assistantships (RAs) are also available to Doctoral students. The level of funding for research assistants varies. Once at the thesis writing stage, PhD students are encouraged to discuss this option with their supervisors.
Conference travel funding is available from various sources. Awards from different sources may be combined together. Eligibility for funding depends on the number of terms spent within a program; terms on leave do not count.
For all travel funding, you must have a paper accepted for presentation at the conference and apply well in advance of the conference.
Support for conference-related travel is available.
