Conclusion

Whether it is the work of Dr. Catherine Mulligan, seeking to clean up the waters around Montreal to increase our quality of life; Dr. Adrian Tsang putting mushrooms to work to find more environmentally sound ways to make fuel and bleach wood pulp for paper; Michael Montanaro helping to make the city a world centre for contemporary dance — or any of the many other examples of work outlined in this publication — there are common threads to Concordia’s approach: an interaction with the community and a culture of collaboration. Both are essential elements of the new economy and our societal competitiveness. We contribute to the quality of place and the quality of life.

Concordia University is an institution with remarkable strengths, both long-established and emerging. In addition to the more traditional areas of study such as psychology, fine arts, business, aerospace and engineering, Concordia is poised to become a leading university in many new areas such as life sciences, advanced materials and nanotechnology.

Those who know Concordia have long realized that in many ways, the university flies below the radar. It has quietly developed methodologies and relationships that give it a huge operational advantage in a world of increasing complexity and cross-disciplinary development.

Its long history of attracting both French-speakers who want to learn English and international students who fall in love with Quebec makes Concordia a great unifier and bridge-builder — not to mention a crucial demographic support to Montreal’s economic and societal future. Many hopes rest on the capacity to keep these graduates in Montreal and convince them to keep on contributing to the city’s development in the future.

The innovative research work at Concordia is a story worth telling. We encourage you to tell us how we can work with you to increase the prosperity and quality of life in our dynamic city.
