Sustainability
In 2002 the student-driven initiative Sustainable Concordia began with the aim of driving the university down the path of ecological awareness, social justice and economic responsibility. It has now grown into a nexus of students, staff, faculty and administrators working together non-hierarchically to address issues of sustainable development on campus. Here are just a few of the projects they are organizing:
Allégo Concordia
Rethink your drive and Bike, Walk, or Bus!
Allégo aims to make it effortless, secure, and safe to walk, bike, use public-transit, or ride-share to Concordia. By reducing the number of single occupancy automobile trips to and from the university, together we can reduce our carbon footprint as a community. Save money, reduce stress, help the environment, get more exercise and help create a more livable community by joining the Allégo Concordia movement.
R4: rethink, reduce/reuse, recycle
The goals of R4 are:
- To educate Concordia campus community members (CCMs) on the importance of the four approaches to waste management;
- To encourage CCMs to become actively involved in their recycling system;
- To develop and support initiatives which evaluate and implement waste reduction and recycling practices.
Concordia greenhouse project
Do you have a green thumb?
The Concordia Greenhouse Project is an initiative that uses the Henry F. Hall building rooftop greenhouse as an all-organic space, geared towards education and research, sustainable horticulture, and community-building. Want to volunteer a couple of hours a week in the greenhouse? The Greenhouse Project is always looking for people to help take care of the plants.
Sustainable event guide
Why not organize your own event on sustainability?
Sustainable Concordia's website is filled with guidance, resources and some simple but not always obvious advice that will aid you in organizing an event that benefits the community, promotes ethical purchasing, and reduces waste.
