Grand prize winner

“Fall Falls down” by Jennifer Laflamme (Student)

What was your inspiration?

“I wanted to capture the students because it’s students who make campus life. No matter what Faculty they’re in, I find everyone expresses their creativity with their style. Also, Montreal is a big fashion city and it’s important to show it.”

Runner-up

“Loyola Campus on a Foggy night!” by Kato Kayembe (Student)

What was your inspiration?

“A beautiful picture can come to you but the hardest job for a photographer is to capture it! The rare foggy night, the football field lights and shadows walking made it the perfect scenery for a shot.”

Runner-up

“The educated kiss” by Andreea Constantinescu (Student)

What was your inspiration?

“We were trying to study and were taking pictures of each other. There was a couple in the book stacks kissing … for a long time. So I took the picture, blurred their faces and titled the shot Educated kiss.”

Here's what two of our judges, Damián Siqueiros and Ben Von Wong, had to say about the winning images:

Damián Siqueiros

1

I was looking for photos that had a clear vision, not just pictures of buildings. The most important part was the aesthetic, the composition and the visual impact. I chose Laflamme’s photo as the first-place entry because I understood the message the photographer was trying to convey. I knew it had to do with fashion. I didn’t need to read the caption to understand that. Also, it was a technically difficult picture for her to do.

2

Kayembe’s photo was one of the most interesting entries of the outdoor campus.

3

Constantinescu’s photo featured strong composition with the lines of the bookshelves running beside the people in the photo.

Ben Von Wong

1

This image truly captured the essence of "Slice of Life" by showcasing a variety of individuals. From a compositional, technical and story-telling standpoint, the image was without a doubt the one image that stood out among all the others. Congrats.

2

Photography is not only about technique but also about being at the right place at the right time. A glorious haunting moment of Concordia was captured in such a way that transports the viewer.

3

Wonderful candid capture of a moment. The image in one shot tells a simple love story anyone can relate to. Simple but magical!
