Michael Rembacz, manufacturing and machining instructor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and SAE Formula advisor, accompanied the Concordia team to the annual student design competition in Lincoln, Nebraska from June 17 to 20.

Concordia’s Formula Racing team finished eighth overall at the Formula SAE Competition in Lincoln Nebraska last month, where they pitted their CFR15 race car against 80 other teams from across the globe.

It was the team’s best overall finish at any Formula SAE competition in history!

“It took a lot of effort from the entire team to get here and accomplish what we did,” said Eric Del Balso, Team Coordinator. “It was truly a team effort.”

In the Formula SAE competition, student teams are challenged to develop a small Formula-style racecar. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules, which is then evaluated for its potential as a production item.

The event consists of multiple static and dynamic tests that the vehicle and teams must overcome over a period of three days. Following the infamous tech-inspection, which for many teams can signal the end, Concordia’s team managed to resolve some minor issues and re-tech the next morning with little effort.

“Having a prepared team before getting to competition is the key to our success,” says team veteran Hubert Berezowski. Hubert Berezowski: “Having a prepared team before getting to competition is the key to our success.”

The CFR15 team completed the design phase of the competition in 13th place, with its highest score to date.

Team veteran Hubert Berezowski said the team’s designs are likely only going to continue getting better each year. “Having a prepared team before getting to competition is the key to our success.”

The dynamic events consist of acceleration, autocross, skid pad and endurance, all set to test the vehicle’s integrity. Hubert Berezowski and Frank Sparapani were Concordia’s drivers for the endurance event. They finished in seventh place, despite fuel starvation encountered over the last three laps.

Out of the 80 registered teams, 65 made it to the competition, and out of those 65, only 18 finished the endurance event.

This year, the Concordia Formula SAE team integrated a fully functional aero package on the car, including an active rear wing. The team members also increased the amount of pre-competition testing and data collection.

Refined chassis and suspension systems along with extensive dyno tuning on the engine also helped the team put in its best performance to date.

The team will be presenting the same vehicle next year at the 2016 Michigan Formula SAE competition, in hopes of earning even higher scores.

Congratulations to the Concordia Formula racing team for all the hard work and effort put in over the years. With this level of integrity and professionalism, the team will only continue to improve.

Good luck, team! Continue making Concordia proud!
