About the Artwork

The land that the Loyola campus currently occupies has been an anglophone Jesuit college, a French-Canadian family farm and before that, Mohawk territory. This sculpture pays homage to Iroquois heritage and the Mohawk Nation in particular. It is a twice life-size bronze work of two figures - a standing clan mother presenting a wampum belt to a seated chief and instructing him in the responsibilities he has been given by the women of the Nation. This work is positioned at a key intersection on the Loyola campus where the historic meets the contemporary, affirming links between native peoples and the Concordia community.

About the Artist

Dave McGary is from Wyoming and works out of New Mexico. He is considered the Master of Realism depicting Native American Indians. He has major pieces in the United States Capitol Rotunda and the Wyoming State Capitol.
