SCPA Announces its 2017 Panel Series

Each year, as part of the SCPA 301 course, the students of the School of Community and Public Affairs organise series of events touching on current policy debates. This year’s exciting initiative will bring together various stakeholders, including community activists, artists and scholars, to engage in an informative discussion on pressing policy issues ranging from the right to die to the changing landscape of language in Montreal.

The panel series will be held at Concordia University’s downtown Sir George Williams campus. Most of the

events will run from 6 to 8:00 p.m., are free and open to the public. The series begins on Tuesday, January 31st

2017 at 5:30 pm with an interactive discussion on the urban inequality experienced by Indigenous Peoples in Montreal.

-- Cities of Tomorrow: Indigenous Peoples and Urban Inequality in Montreal with Carlo DeAngelis; Aboriginal Liaison Officer for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal, Chantel Henderson; student of Community and Economic Development, Nakuset Sohkisiwin; the Native Women's Shelter of Montréal, and Marie-Josée Parent; general director of DestiNATIONS. Moderated by Dr. Daniel Salée; professor at the School of Community and Public Affairs. Tuesday, January 31st 5:30-7:30pm, room H-767.

-- The Nature of Institutional Racism in Quebec with Fo Niemi; Center for Action Research on Race Relations, Eric Shragge; Immigrant Workers Centre. Moderated by Lachlan Madill; journalist and host of “Urban Nations”. Tuesday, February 7th 6-8:00pm, H-767.

-- Right to Die: The debate on Assisted Dying with Louis Roy: a palliative care physician, and Lorie Saller: ethicist from MUHC. Tuesday, March 7th, 6-8:00 pm, lounge on the 7th floor of the Henri F Hall Building.

-- The Changing Landscape of Language in Montreal with Jenny Salgado; musician, also named an artist representative by Amnesty International. Moderated by Celine Cooper; columnist at the Montreal Gazette, Tuesday, March 14th, 6-8:00 pm, H-767.

-- Who Should Sell my Pot? The impacts of the legalization of Marijuana in Canada moderater by Alexandre Haarman; director of programming at C2 Montreal. March 21st, 6-8:00 pm. H-767.                                                      

-- Populism and the Politics of Anger with John Parisella; Executive Director of Campus Montreal, Ilona Dougherty; co-founder of Apathy is Boring. Moderated by Robert Valdmanis; lecturer at the SCPA. Tuesday, March 28th, 6-8:00pm, 1590 Dr. Penfield, Room 119.
