Organized by the School of Community and Public Affairs, this panel discussion centres around physician-assisted suicide in Quebec.

With the recent passing of the right to die legislation and Quebec’s major role in this national debate over the course of the past few years, we’ve chosen to take the debate to new heights by focusing on the various frontiers of physician-assisted suicide pertaining to neurodegenerative diseases.

This discussion aims to investigate the notion of “sound mind” decision-making and other limitations currently posed by new legislation, as well as the future developments, if any, of physician-assisted suicide. The event will also offer the opportunity to challenge the initial fears of this law being a “slippery slope” and explore whether assisted suicide for illnesses like depression or even loneliness are part of the fear in legalizing the right to die.

With countries like Berlin already taking these huge leaps, we are interested in examining the issue from a Canadian perspective in order to learn if it would be realistic to expect Canada to follow in these footsteps in the near future.
