The goals of the workshop are to put a spotlight on emerging synthetic biology research in Canada, to situate that research in relation to leading centres and initiatives in the UK and US, and to identify pathways to commercialization involving both large-scale industries and small to medium enterprises.

A key audience for the workshop will be government agencies and funding organizations in Canada for whom synthetic biology should be a major investment and policy priority. Equally important is the need for robust discussion of receptor capacity for research activity, and more specifically, the role that the private sector has to play to support and sustain innovation in the field.

The desired outcomes of this event are:

  • to explore/enhance international collaborative opportunities (including research, funding and investment)
  • to provide a better understanding of the global impact of the Synthetic Biology; and
  • to influence/inform policy makers.
