Call for Humanities Course Proposals

The Humanities PhD Program in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture (CISSC) is accepting proposals to teach its core courses HUMA 888 and HUMA 889 (see generic descriptions below) in the 2017-2018 academic year.

If you are interested in teaching one of these courses, please submit by October 7, 2016 a course proposal to Humanities Director Dr. Bina Freiwald bina.freiwald@concordia.ca with copies to Sharon Fitch sharon.fitch@concordia.ca

You will find course descriptions for currently and previously taught HUMA 888 and HUMA 889 on the Humanities website under Courses. You are also welcome to contact Dr. Freiwald to inquire further about these courses or the Humanities PhD program more generally.

If your proposal is accepted, you will be making arrangements with the Chair of your department to fulfill 3 credits of your workload in this fashion. Cross-listing at the graduate level is also a possibility depending upon enrollment. Proposals will be vetted by the Humanities PhD Program Committee at a meeting later in October and you will be informed of the results shortly thereafter.

In drafting your course proposal please keep in mind that the Humanities PhD is a bi-faculty program offered jointly by the Faculties of Arts and Science and Fine Arts, and attracts students from diverse backgrounds who work on interdisciplinary projects with advisors (each student has a committee of 3 advisors) from departments across the two Faculties. The two core courses, taken by all students in their first year in the program, are intended to provide a broad basis for their interdisciplinary degree, and assignments are usually designed so that students can connect their particular interests to the material covered. 

HUMA 888 Seminar in Interdisciplinary Studies I (3 credits) FALL 2017: A mandatory core seminar to be taken by all students in their first year in the program. This course is an introduction to theories and methodologies of interdisciplinary exploration germane to the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts. Its aims include enhancing reflective awareness of the role of conceptual frameworks and institutional practices in the shaping of interdisciplinary scholarly and creative explorations, and providing students with opportunities to think through theoretical and methodological issues vital to their diverse interdisciplinary projects.

HUMA 889 Seminar in Interdisciplinary Studies II (3 credits) WINTER 2018: A mandatory core seminar to be taken by all students in their first year in the program. Each year a different topic or approach is selected (e.g., translation, publics and counterpublics, performance, research-creation), with the aim of exploring how it is pursued and challenged across disciplinary boundaries.
