Information for mentees
To get the greatest benefit from the Concordia Mentor Program, the mentee should:
- Clarify goals of the mentorship - know what you want to get from the Concordia Mentor Program.
- Understand your specific needs and your expectations in exploring career options or furthering your studies.
- Take the initiative and ask questions in a timely manner.
- Learn and keep track of lessons learned.
- Search for ways to develop personally and challenge yourself.
- Remain open to suggestions and change.
- Be honest and willing to accept criticism.
- Be responsive to suggestions and constructive feedback.
- Respect your mentor's time: do not overburden him or her by demanding too much time and attention or becoming overly dependent.
- Initiate regular contact and interactions - keep appointments with your mentor.
- Be appreciative of your mentor's and investment - send a thank-you card or e-mail at the end of the mentoring session.

A mentor is:
- Someone with wisdom, skills and experience to share
- A teacher
- A voluntary guide or advisor who provides support, advice and encourages focus on attainable goals
- A role model who demonstrates strong citizenship and leadership skills
- A trusted counsellor
- A coach who encourages action steps and development of specific and appropriate goals
A mentor is not:
- Your new best buddy - always address him/her respectfully
- Mandated to offer you a particular job or manage your job search
- There to offer guidance on issues regarding your personal life
- A therapist
