Objectives

This course will familiarize students with strategies for effective oral communication in engineering practice. Areas covered include:

  • Preparation of effective presentations
  • Structuring logical arguments for oral delivery
  • Team dynamics and communication
  • Effective listening behavior
  • Presenting complicated material for mixed audiences

Course description

Successful engineering practitioners are adept at communicating complex information to a variety of stakeholders: colleagues, clients, government officials, and the public, making formal and informal oral communication skills crucial to career success. Yet most engineers do not familiarize themselves with proven methods for effective oral communication. This course provides participants with both theoretical understanding and practical techniques for optimizing their oral communication.

Credit hours: 7.5

Instructor

Deborah Dysart-Gale is an associate professor and chair of the Centre for Engineering in Society. She holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, an MA from the University of Houston and a BA from Queen’s College, New York. She leads faculty research and training in cross-cultural communication and composition studies.
