Independent students
As an independent undergraduate student, you are not seeking a Degree or Certificate but are registered in individual courses on a part-time basis.
There are two categories of Independent undergraduate student:
- those who meet regular admission requirements.
- Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents who meet Mature Entry requirements, and satisfy the University that they have the right background for the course(s) for which they wish to register
Note: International Students are only eligible to apply for independent studies if they are already in Montreal. International independent student status is not intended for foreigners applying from abroad since this status may not enable them to obtain the required Study Permit and CAQ to study in Canada.
Admission requirements
Independent students must satisfy admission requirements. Independent students may register for a maximum of 9 credits per term. They register for courses once all undergraduate degree program students have had a chance to select their courses; their Independent status in no way guarantees them a place in a given course.
Independent students must satisfy the University that they have completed prerequisite courses where required. In these cases, a "Prerequisite Waiver" form must be completed.
Switching to a program
Independent students who subsequently wish to enter a degree or Certificate program must apply for admission online. Credits acquired by Independent students may subsequently be applied towards a degree or Certificate program, if appropriate. In the case of the Faculty of Arts and Science, an Independent student may be granted a maximum of 30 credits towards a degree.
