Programs with additional requirements

In addition to the general admission requirements, the programs listed below have extra program-specific requirements. These additional requirements must be arranged with the departments to which you are applying. It is your responsibility to make these arrangements. Please click on the names of the programs below for information about letters of intent, portfolios, interviews, auditions and specific deadline dates.

Faculty of Arts and Science

Applicants are required to identify a supervisor in their statement of purpose.

An admission offer will not be issued until a supervisor match has been made. Students are encouraged to review the list of faculty members' field of interests and directly contact those with whom you would like to work. When you are accepted by a supervisor, forward an email with your supervisors approval to biograd.fas@concordia.ca, be sure to include your full name and student ID number as well as the email exchange with the approval of the supervisor.

Applicants are required to identify a supervisor in their statement of purpose.

An admission offer will not be issued until a supervisor match has been made. Students are encouraged to review the list of faculty members' field of interests and directly contact those with whom you would like to work. Please note that due to the competitive nature of this program, candidates meeting minimum requirements may not be accepted. Some candidates may be asked to interview with a committee member to aid in the final decision.

  • Statement of purpose (500 words or less) that includes:
    • reasons for choosing the M.A. Child Studies program
    • current academic and professional goals and how they relate to your past experience
    • relevant achievements or contributions in academic, professional, or community contexts
    • if you wish, indicate the names of one or more faculty members you might like to work with to complete a thesis or internship project

Specific admission requirements for the program include:

  • Statement of Purpose (approx. 500 words) that describes your academic and/or professional background (including publications, awards and relevant employment), your career goals, and the reasons why you believe Concordia’s PhD in Communication program will offer you the right ‘home’ for your studies. If relevant, please also indicate any scholarships, fellowships or bursaries you have already secured for your PhD studies or for which you intend to apply.
  • Research Statement (approx. 1500-2000 words) that describes in detail the proposed area(s) and program of research. Please also append a bibliography (max. 1 page) representing key works in your proposed area of study.
  • Optional support material may include writing samples or completed research/creation projects (website links, cds, dvds, or other documentation) to be sent to the university drop-off courier address.

A 600-word statement of purpose explaining your understanding of CED, motivations for application, experiences with CED/community work and related knowledge and skills.

Reference and assessment forms

  • If you are applying with an undergraduate degree: Two Confidential Letters of Reference and Academic Assessment forms; one from an academic source and one from a work/volunteering-related source attesting to your experience in CED.
  • If you are applying without an undergraduate degree: Three Confidential Letters of Reference and Academic Assessment forms from work/volunteering-related sources attesting to your experience in CED and your ability to pursue graduate studies.
  • If your primary language is not English or French, you are required to submit official language test scores, unless exempted. If you were not educated in an institution whose language of instruction is the same as that of the language of the year of study you are applying to, you may be required to complete a short assessment by videoconferencing with the director of the program.

In certain cases, you may be required to do an interview.

All interested individuals should apply directly to the Micro-Program in the Foundations of Teaching in Higher and Continuing Education.

The application dossier should include:

  • Detailed CV
  • Transcripts from most recent and/or current post-secondary institutions.
  • Two letters of reference that address your potential as an instructor.
  • Statement of purpose (500 to 750 words) which outlines your interest in and experience with teaching, other career experiences that prepared you for teaching, your teaching philosophy, your reasons for applying to this program, and the context in which you hope to apply the skills developed in it—Cegep or college, continuing or professional education, or university.
  • Demonstration of proficiency in English. If the primary language is not English, demonstration that proficiency in English is sufficient to work as an instructor: IELTS: minimum score of 6.5 overall with at least a 7.0 score each on speaking and listening. TOEFL: Minimum overall score of 92 with a minimum 25 each on speaking and listening. DET – minimum score of 120. Please refer to the Graduate Admission page for additional information on the Language Proficiency requirements and exemptions.

    • the name of a potential supervisor from our full-time faculty whose research area complements your own (it is advantageous to have communicated with them and that they have agreed to work with you [if admitted], but not required for application); 
    • a list of courses in our program which are of particular interest to you. 
  • Three Letters of Reference and assessment form (2 must be from academic sources)
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) including a summary of any work experience (paid or voluntary) that is relevant to your application 
  • Sample(s) of journalism (any format), research or research-creation (10 pages maximum) (Optional)

Supervision: It is not necessary to solicit a supervisor as part of the application process. Upon admission, a primary supervisor and committee are assigned to guide the student through the comprehensive exams. After passing the comprehensive exam, the student can consult with the supervisor about whether the committee should remain the same moving forward or if changes would better complement the student’s research focus.

Statement of Purpose: Your statement of purpose should give an overview of your research interests and goals. It should: 

  • state your preferred area(s) of concentration within the PhD program in Education (Applied Linguistics, Child Studies, Educational Studies, or Educational Technology).
  • briefly outline your research plan including introduction, theoretical issues, main research questions, methodology, and key references.
  • explain how the plan relates to the research of one or two tenured or tenure-track faculty in the department (consult the list of fulltime, tenured or tenure-track faculty members at the Departmental website

Specific admission requirements for the program include:

  • Statement of purpose (two pages maximum): Outline your academic background and, as specifically as possible, describe a program of research and/or creation (for creative writing applicants) you will pursue during the degree. Describe your future goals related to your proposed graduate work. The English Graduate Program Committee invites members of equity-seeking groups to identify themselves if they wish.
  • Creative Writing portfolio (for creative writing option).
  • A sample of your written work (for English Literature option), such as a course paper. Fifteen pages maximum.

Specific admission requirements for the program include:

  • Statement of purpose (three pages maximum): Outline your academic background and provide a detailed description of the research project you expect to develop in our program, including the relevance of your project to faculty and research projects in the department. (Please note that you are not expected to name a supervisor in the application.) The English Graduate Program Committee invites members of equity-seeking groups to identify themselves if they wish.

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) including a summary of any work experience (paid or voluntary) that is relevant to your application 

Specific admission requirements for the program include:

    A two page description of your particular academic interests, the pertinence of your educational background to those interests, and how this degree program would support them. The statement should clearly outline what it is you wish to study, why you would like to study it, and what are your interests in pursuing this graduate degree. The statement should also include a paragraph or two describing a project you might undertake for your Guided Research Paper or Thesis (although you may conceive of a different project during your studies.) The project proposed should be focused and specific, rather than wide and vague. Please also include your competence in languages relevant to your study.

    Submit a brief sample of your scholarly writing in English or French (approx. 1500-2500 words)

    • The interests and focus of many students evolve and change in the course of their academic career, and you will not be obliged to write on the topic you propose in your Description of Proposed Research. The Admissions Committee will use your Description of Proposed Research to assess your ability to conceive a viable project and to identify potential advisors.

To accelerate the process, applicants may wish to contact research faculty in your area in order to express your interests and qualifications. It is recommended that you submit a research dossier that includes:

In the event of lack of supervisor, qualified MASc applicants will be notified and offered admission into the MEng Program instead. Applicants who wish to take advantage of this option can send the request to the Graduate Program Director at any time.

Faculty of Fine Arts

A writing sample (8-10 pages), which usually takes the form of an art history undergraduate essay.

  • A letter of support from the applicant's proposed supervisor at Concordia University
  • A writing sample (15-20 pages), usually a chapter from the applicant's MA thesis
  • A statement of purpose (5-8 pages) which should discuss why the applicant has chosen to pursue a Doctorate in Art History at Concordia University. Like a detailed research proposal, the letter should indicate the project that the applicant aims to develop, the contribution to scholarship it will make, and how the applicant's academic and professional background has prepared him/her to undertake the proposed research. If a faculty member agrees to supervise a project, they can give some advice in preparing a research proposal for the application.

  • Sample of scholarly work
  • Program Proposal:
    • a detailed statement of the fields of study and the core areas to be covered by the proposed program
    • a concise description of the intended research (including expected outcomes, a detailed rationale of the need for an individualized program)
    • a statement explaining the relationship between the proposed members of the supervisory committee and the core areas of the proposed research
    • proposal of courses (18 credits) central to the program of study, including one 3-credit research seminar and 6 credits in regularly schedule graduate courses
    • bibliography (2 pages).
  • Supervisory committee forms from at least three potential committee members one of whom is designated Principal Supervisor.
