Applicants are required to identify a supervisor in their statement of purpose.

Specific admission requirements for the program include:

• Statement of Purpose (approx. 500 words) that describes your academic and/or professional background (including publications, awards and relevant employment), your career goals, and the reasons why you believe Concordia’s PhD in Communication program will offer you the right ‘home’ for your studies. If relevant, please also indicate any scholarships, fellowships or bursaries you have already secured for your PhD studies or for which you intend to apply.
• Research Statement (approx. 1500-2000 words) that describes in detail the proposed area(s) and program of research. Please also append a bibliography (max. 1 page) representing key works in your proposed area of study.
• Optional support material may include writing samples or completed research/creation projects (website links, cds, dvds, or other documentation) to be sent to the university drop-off courier address.

A 600-word statement of purpose explaining your understanding of CED, motivations for application, experiences with CED/community work and related knowledge and skills.

Reference and assessment forms

• If you are applying with an undergraduate degree: Two Confidential Letters of Reference and Academic Assessment forms; one from an academic source and one from a work/volunteering-related source attesting to your experience in CED.
• If you are applying without an undergraduate degree: Three Confidential Letters of Reference and Academic Assessment forms from work/volunteering-related sources attesting to your experience in CED and your ability to pursue graduate studies.
• If your primary language is not English or French, you are required to submit official language test scores, unless exempted. If you were not educated in an institution whose language of instruction is the same as that of the language of the year of study you are applying to, you may be required to complete a short assessment by videoconferencing with the director of the program.

In certain cases, you may be required to do an interview.

• A statement of purpose (5 pages, double spaced), including: 
  • a brief overview of your university studies and what courses, professors, or scholarly work and theorists were the most influential and/or most challenging; 
  • a brief description of the type of research you would like to undertake; 
  • the name of a potential supervisor from our full-time faculty whose research area complements your own (it is advantageous to have communicated with them and that they have agreed to work with you [if admitted], but not required for application); 
  • a list of courses in our program which are of particular interest to you. 
• Three Letters of Reference and assessment form (2 must be from academic sources)
  
• Curriculum vitae (CV) including a summary of any work experience (paid or voluntary) that is relevant to your application 
• Sample(s) of journalism (any format), research or research-creation (10 pages maximum) (Optional)
  

Supervision: It is not necessary to solicit a supervisor as part of the application process. Upon admission, a primary supervisor and committee are assigned to guide the student through the comprehensive exams. After passing the comprehensive exam, the student can consult with the supervisor about whether the committee should remain the same moving forward or if changes would better complement the student’s research focus.

Statement of Purpose: Your statement of purpose should give an overview of your research interests and goals. It should: 

• state your preferred area(s) of concentration within the PhD program in Education (Applied Linguistics, Child Studies, Educational Studies, or Educational Technology).
• briefly outline your research plan including introduction, theoretical issues, main research questions, methodology, and key references.
• explain how the plan relates to the research of one or two tenured or tenure-track faculty in the department (consult the list of fulltime, tenured or tenure-track faculty members at the Departmental website

Specific admission requirements for the program include:

• Statement of purpose (two pages maximum): Outline your academic background and, as specifically as possible, describe a program of research and/or creation (for creative writing applicants) you will pursue during the degree. Describe your future goals related to your proposed graduate work. The English Graduate Program Committee invites members of equity-seeking groups to identify themselves if they wish.
• Creative Writing portfolio (for creative writing option).
• A sample of your written work (for English Literature option), such as a course paper. Fifteen pages maximum.

Specific admission requirements for the program include:

• Description of Proposed Research should include a description of a proposed thesis, including methodology and select bibliography. The description should be from 1,000 to 2,000 words, and the bibliography should present ten to twenty primary and secondary sources.  You may include this item together with your Statement of Purpose.
  • The interests and focus of many students evolve and change in the course of their academic career, and you will not be obliged to write on the topic you propose in your Description of Proposed Research. The Admissions Committee will use your Description of Proposed Research to assess your ability to conceive a viable project and to identify potential advisors.

• A letter of support from the applicant's proposed supervisor at Concordia University
• A writing sample (15-20 pages), usually a chapter from the applicant's MA thesis
• A statement of purpose (5-8 pages) which should discuss why the applicant has chosen to pursue a Doctorate in Art History at Concordia University. Like a detailed research proposal, the letter should indicate the project that the applicant aims to develop, the contribution to scholarship it will make, and how the applicant's academic and professional background has prepared him/her to undertake the proposed research. If a faculty member agrees to supervise a project, they can give some advice in preparing a research proposal for the application.
