History of the Grey Nuns
The Sisters of Charity (the Grey Nuns) were founded in 1737 by Marguerite d'Youville and three of her companions. Setting up a home for the needy, they provided shelter and cared for Montreal's disadvantaged.
Their dedication towards helping the poor became the motivation for the establishment of the Mother House of the Grey Nuns of Montreal in 1871. Designed by renowned Quebec architect Victor Bourgeau, the convent site encompassed a city block and was arguably one of the largest and most impressive complexes in the country.
Today, Concordia has become the honoured custodian of this historical architectural, social and religious legacy. The Mother House will become a keystone of Quartier Concordia, carrying with it an esteemed tradition and a sound establishment. Find out more about the Mother House under Campus pavilions.
