Note
This is a five-year full-time contract appointment.
Scope
Reporting to the Senior Director, Environmental Health Safety & Security, the incumbent provides leadership and due diligence oversight to the University in its management of environmental safety in a manner, which supports the academic, research, and service mission throughout all of its operations and activities.
Primary responsibilities
- Provide institutional leadership and oversight to support the line management from the Office of the President to identify, evaluate and control hazards and assesses risk. (i.e.: through the line of supervision to the individual employee and student).
- Provide expertise and leadership to multidisciplinary project teams of stakeholders, parity and technical committees and internal organizations in the development of policy and procedures.
- Ensure that the President’s Executive, University Officers and Board of Governors are informed of regulatory and due diligence issues and the status of health and safety at the University through timely advice and regular reports.
- Develop, promote, support and evaluate responsible EHS policy, training programs, and practices throughout line management activities.
- Direct the activities of EHS specialists in the provision of central services.
- Promote and facilitate the involvement of stakeholders in EHS matters through education, information, and committee work.
- Advocate for health and safety through participation in institutional planning and decision-making.
- Foster and promote the added value of a well-planned and effectively managed approach to health & safety through demonstrated EHS results.
- Represent the Institution with regulatory bodies, other educational institutions and industry, specifically with respect to compliance and best practices through auditing, reporting, etc.
- Communicate and actively participate in external professional organizations, such as CREPUQ,.
- Identify areas where innovation or foresight is needed internally.
- Manage the EHS office, strategic direction, planning, personnel management, work assignment and performance evaluation.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Environmental and or Occupational Health and Safety management or a related discipline and at least seven years of experience in a complex working environment, preferably in an academic environment.
- Experience in the development and implementation of innovative and effective health and safety programs with an emphasis on laboratory safety (chemical, biosafety, and radiation), inspection, investigation and training.
- Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management from a recognized body or institution and a proven track record of customer service and process management.
- Very effective communication and influencing skills
- Good spoken and written English and French (Level 4) in order to communicate effectively with internal clients and external agencies.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Flexibility to work in varying hours and schedules and on emergency response teams.
- Security clearance for "controlled goods".
