Note
This is a full-time, contract position.
Scope
Reporting to the General Counsel, the incumbent is the primary source of legal advice and expertise for the Human Resources Department.
Primary responsibilities
- Act as the primary source of legal advice to the Human Resources Department.
- Establish and prioritize overall University legal goals and objectives related to the employment and labour law and related fields.
- Remain current of statutory and regulatory enactments/amendments and civil law, in particular in the fields of employment and labour relations law; recommend appropriate operational, compliance and /or policy responses.
- Supervise the preparation for, and represent the University before the Quebec Human Rights Commission and at other judicial, quasi-judicial, administrative, arbitration and other court proceedings.
- Assist and instruct outside counsel.
- Negotiate, draft, review, and approve the form and content of settlement agreements and other legal instruments.
- Conduct research and provide information and advice to University committees and working groups.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the General Counsel.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Law and a minimum of eight years of relevant experience.
- Member of the Barreau of Quebec.
- Knowledge of the University environment or other para-public setting is desirable.
- Very good knowledge of spoken and written English and French (Level 5) to provide and interpret detailed information and to deal with complex situations in both languages.
- Basic knowledge of Word (to format correspondence, documents, and reports) and of Outlook.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, along with proven leadership abilities.
- Superior ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
- Diligent attention to detail.
Salary
115,000.00-126,000.00 per annum
