Scope
Reporting to the Technical Officer, the incumbent performs technical duties associated with departmental undergraduate and graduate Civil Engineering laboratories as assigned, with the operation, instruction, and maintenance of equipment.
Primary responsibilities
- Maintain BCEE (Building, Civil, and Environmental Engineering) Civil laboratory equipment and facilities: materials, structures, soil, foundation, water resources, and surveying.
- Support the laboratory instructors and researchers and focus on the critical issues in the laboratories operations and safety. Demonstrate and supervise the use of civil engineering laboratory equipment to students.
- As a Safety Officer and Emergency Responder, instruct, supervise, and monitor safety procedures for the BCEE heavy laboratories. Ensure laboratories are physically secure.
- Supervise the preparation, fabrication, and testing of various components for teaching and research projects in civil engineering laboratories.
- Work with undergraduate and graduate students on their projects.
- Work cooperatively with others to meet the changing requirements within the Department and Faculty, which may include additional duties and responsibilities.
Requirements
- Diploma of College Studies (3-year technical program) in a field related to the primary responsibilities or a certificate of completion from an accredited Civil Engineering Technology Institute or other related technical program and four years of relevant experience.
- Prior work experience in civil engineering laboratories an asset.
- Ability to solve complex technical problems.
- Understanding of civil engineering terminology, laboratory processes, and typical equipment. Ability to use technical laboratory equipment.
- Experience in civil engineering design and construction practices to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities required.
- Good spoken and written English (Level 4) to assist and instruct students. Basic spoken French (Level 3) is an asset.
- Basic skills in Word and Excel to create and format documents and spreadsheets and the ability to learn and adapt to new software as required.
- Physical ability to lift and carry a wide range of laboratory equipment several times a day (at times may be required to lift and carry equipment weighing 30kg) and to maintain laboratory equipment and facilities, as attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to University’s satisfaction.
Salary
$21.44 – $32.29 per hour
