Pip Day: “The university gallery serves as a critical space where new ideas, innovative methodologies, and diverse modes of engagement converge.”

Curator, researcher, writer and educator Pip Day is the new director of the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery. She will begin her mandate on June 10, 2024.

With a career spanning over 25 years that has included stops in New York City, Mexico City and Berlin, Day brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this pivotal role.

Day has curated international exhibitions, spearheaded public programs, and founded both small- and large-scale institutions and residency programs. Her contributions to institutions like the SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art and her leadership at organizations like el-instituto showcase her ability to drive meaningful change within the arts community.

For Dominique Bérubé, vice-president, research and graduate studies, what sets Day apart is her unwavering commitment to supporting artists and socially-engaged practices.

“Pip believes in fostering new connections, facilitating long-term collaborative research, and engaging audiences through innovative modes of presentation. Her vision aligns perfectly with Concordia’s dedication to artistic exploration and social responsibility.”

For Day, the Ellen Gallery holds a unique position in the ecology of Montreal’s art community.

“The university gallery serves as a critical space where new ideas, innovative methodologies, and diverse modes of engagement converge,” she says.

“In times where dialogue and reflection are crucial, it becomes a centre for intergenerational learning communities, fostering connections between artists, cultural practitioners, publics, and their manifold stories and practices.”
